Lisa Gallagher is Senior Director of Privacy and Security for HIMSS, the largest U.S. cause-based, not-for-profit healthcare association focused on the optimal use of information technology and management systems for the betterment of healthcare.
In this role, she is responsible for the association’s privacy and security programs, as well as its related volunteer steering committee, task force and five work groups. Gallagher also provides privacy and security content support for HIMSS federal and state government relations and advocacy work.
With more than 25 years of consulting experience in security engineering, hardware design and software development, Gallagher is a thought leader on the practical application of security techniques and standards, as well as privacy and security policy in today's healthcare environment. Gallagher currently serves as Co-Chair of the Health IT sub-council on the Health Sector Coordinating Council (HSCC).The HSCC serves as the designated healthcare industry representative body, and coordinates with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to implement critical infrastructure/security planning and analysis activities for the healthcare sector in accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD-7).
Before joining the Society, she served as the Certification Development Director for the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT), where she helped develop a product certification program for ambulatory electronic health record (EHR) products. In addition, with her knowledge of systems security engineering and security analysis, Gallagher founded Javelin Technology Group, LLC, an information technology and security consulting firm.
In a past position as Senior Vice President of the Health Information Technology Department at URAC, an independent, nonprofit healthcare accreditation organization, Gallagher created and managed a series of information technology-focused healthcare accreditation programs, including the HIPAA Privacy and Security Accreditations.
Gallagher has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, and she is a certified trust technology evaluator (NSA) and Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) (ISACA).
