Shelley Price, MS, FHIMSS, is Director of Payer and Life Sciences for HIMSS, the largest U.S. cause-based, not-for-profit healthcare association focused on the optimal use of information technology and management systems for the betterment of healthcare.

 

She is one of the lead architects in HIMSS’ efforts to engage the Life Sciences and Payer communities around improving patient care and quality outcomes through the use of health IT.  Price supports the Payer and Life Sciences industries by providing leadership and oversight of the HIMSS Payer Initiative and the Life Sciences Initiative though the management of the Life Sciences Information Technology Committee and its Taskforces, the Life Sciences Roundtable, and the Patient-Centered Payer Roundtable.  In this role, she works with HIMSS volunteers, industry leaders, and other subject matter experts to develop content materials including a series of Good Information Practices modules for the Life Sciences industry, whitepapers, educational sessions, thought leadership, and other resources and tools.  Additionally, Price also supports HIMSS’ activities around various health IT-enabled ‘collaborative’ programs, including Accountable Care Organizations, to deliver value-based healthcare.  

 

Price has worked on healthcare policy in Washington for more than a dozen years. She began her career as Associate Director of Governmental Issues for a prominent Washington, D.C.-based law firm specializing in energy, the environment, natural resources, and health care.  While there, she was a part of the team that represented a Fortune 25 company that is one of the world’s largest health care services company and a leader in health information technology and pharmaceutical supply management.  She is experienced in supporting clients’ needs through research, analyses, and federal engagement.

 

Prior to joining HIMSS, Price served as Senior Manager, Strategic Planning and Policy in the Policy and Research department at the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), the trade association of the country’s leading pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies. In addition to providing research, analysis, and strategic planning in support of the association’s policy engagement on intellectual property and creating an abbreviated regulatory approval pathway for biosimilars, she was lead staff on health IT issues and manager of the PhRMA Health IT Workgroup.  In this capacity she created a strategic work plan for the workgroup that addressed the association’s priority engagement points in the health IT debate; developed positions and policies on privacy and data access matters; led the drafting of the industry response to the 2008 federal rulemaking on e-prescribing standards; reviewed all federal health IT bills; identified threats and opportunities for the industry, created positions around those points, and engaged with various outside entities to further those positions; and responded to member company inquiries on various health IT concerns.  

 

Price obtained her bachelor’s of science degree from The University of Michigan and her master’s of science from The Johns Hopkins University, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.  She is a Board Member of the Arlington Virginia Chapter of the League of Women Voters.  Price is also a HIMSS Fellow.
